Whether it’s due to an acquisition, an internal reorganization, or leadership switches, company changes can wreck havoc for the employees affected. It’s normal to feel anxious and unsure of your place in the new environment.

Change can be a good thing and an opportunity to show your strengths to a new set of leaders. To do this, you can take initiative by:

  • Taking ownership of a project you know is important to your group and leaders
  • Focusing on things you can control and performing to the best of your abilities
  • Adapting and remaining flexible as changes occur
  • Being a voice of positivity

Change can also be a time of great uncertainty. Will you keep your job? Are layoffs inevitable? Will you get along with your new management? How will you be perceived in the new role?

Instead of allowing thoughts of negative “what ifs” to dominate, work to manage and reduce the anxiety by doing the following.

  • Stay informed about upcoming changes and company goals to better understand new direction
  • Maintain a daily routine for stability
  • Practice stress relief techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and exercise
  • Seek support from family, friends, or mental health professionals to talk through feelings and gain perspective
  • Be adaptable and focus on personal and professional development

Fight anxiety with the empowering actions above to help maintain mental clarity and react in your best interests throughout times of change.
